calling all suggestions

Posted in mousie, nonsense by anonymouseandcheese on August 21, 2008

So, I’m acting as “personal attendant” for an upcoming wedding (8/31).  Yes, that is a job assignment up there with cake cutter and gift table babysitter.

Anyway, my main assignment is to keep the bride cool.  Typical weather for Labor Day weekend in this area is something akin to horrendously hot with more than a touch of humidity.  Additionally, the bride has polyester lining in her dress (that cost thousands of dollars – you’d think they could find something less man-made to line such an expensive dress with.  So, this is the kind of wedding where there is someone whose sole responsibility it is to keep the bride cool.  (And make sure the bridesmaid’s purses make it to the reception.)

Anyone have any fun suggestions on things I can do to make the day more breezy and not feel like some schmo who is just hanging out with the bridal party all day?

I’ve heard of putting deoderant on legs – do people really do that?  Are there any consequences to doing this that would crop up later in the honeymoon suite?

The bride is already planning on changing out of her dress between pictures and ceremony.  Any other brilliant ideas?  Get those creative juices flowing here people.

That spray deodorant seems like it ought to work on legs. Okay, here are my ideas. Get one of those little cooler bags (kind of a cross between a lunch box and a cooler) and keep bags of ice and bottled water in it. Those bags have straps so you can carry it over your shoulder. Get one of those little battery powered fans. And my husband claims that there is some kind of special towel designed for athletes that wipes up sweat without irritating skin (and therefore should be gentle on make-up). Oh, and ice bags on pressure points whenever possible- back of the neck and wrists. The blood is closer to the surface of the skin there and ice will cool off her blood and then carry cooler blood around the rest of her body. And if you’ll be in the sun a lot, perhaps a parasol to keep the sun off? Oh, and carry around her sunglasses for her, that can make a big difference.

The only thing I could think of is a battery-operated hand-held fan. You probably don’t want anything wet on her face or around her hair. A cold washcloth on the back of her neck might work, if she is wearing her hair up.

What about those icy-cold patches you can get in the sport’s injury aisle at drugstores? Maybe she can keep one on her lower back, if her dress isn’t too tight?

Good luck with that. Let us know how it goes.
