in which i ramble about a tv crush, a movie and bridesmaid dresses

I’d like to add a quick disclaimer to the top of this post.  I’m fairly certain it is one of the most random I’ve written and is totally all over the place.  I don’t even want to reread it, so I don’t even know for sure what it says.  That being said, please feel free to click away now.  (As opposed to the rest of the time when you are 1,000% obligated to suffer through every last word.

I watched the movie 27 Dresses last night.  It was on my list for a lot of reasons.  One of which being that the leading man was my first hollywood-crush.

Ricky from Second Noah.

Okay, so no one probably remembers that tv show except for me.  James Marsden has also been in entertainment greats like X-Men, The Notebook, Hairspray, and Enchanted.

Don’t worry, honey.  Ricky was my first love, but it was the fictional character, not the actor I was hot for.

Anyway, back to the movie.

If you haven’t seen it, it’s about a girl who is looking for love and in the meantime, has been a bridesmaid in 27 different weddings all with hideous dresses.

Do brides really choose ugly dresses on purpose for their bridesmaids, so that they will look prettier by comparison?  That’s messed up.

Whatever though, it’s your wedding photos.

I’ve been in 4 weddings.  I’ve worn red, sage green, pewter with sequins and most recently a purplish gray.

I think my bridesmaid season is over.

And I’m not really sad about it.

I was in four weddings and I was happy as a clam to stand up beside my sister/friends on their very special wedding days.  I was happy to host showers, have dress fittings and smile for pictures.  I was even willing (if not happy) to give maid of honor speeches.

And that’s saying something.

This was my first wedding party experience.  The bride was my dear friend who I’ve known since kindergarten.  When I saw her in her dress and veil on her wedding day, I teared up.  Because she looked like a bride.  And we were grown up.  I don’t remember much else about it now, it was five days before Christmas and I was the manager of the department of a department store that carries all of the Christmas stuff, among many many other things.  I think I left work early, drove straight to the rehearsal (five hours away) and left early in the morning after the wedding and went straight to work.  December 2003 is a big blur for me of work, work and more work.

This was the wedding of my college roommate.  We actually went to high school together, but were not good friends until college.  And, I think good is a bit of an understatement in this case.  We lived together three years and I think it’s safe to say that we were in a place in between friends and real life sisters.  She married her high school sweetheart, and her wedding was like an unofficial five year reunion for the Class of ’99.  We ate a lot of bacon for breakfast and had many laughs along the way.

I don’t have a picture on this computer from the other wedding I was in, but this is from my sister’s wedding this past April.  The whole thing was in her backyard and she would have been my hero just for considering it, but she actually attempted it and pulled it off beautifully.  What else can I say.  She’s my sister.  She rocks.  Almost as much as me.

Speaking of me (what is more narcissistic than a blog?), this picture is from my wedding.  The bridesmaids in my wedding wore green.  Not my first choice of a color, but that was the color of the dress that I ended up liking.  It ended up looking great in photos and I had zero regrets about it.  And, both of my bridesmaids have worn it at least one time other than my wedding.  To me, that is a bridesmaid dress WIN.

Now, I’m just looking forward to the day that all of these photos look hilariously out of style.  Until then, congrats to those of you who got married in the early 90’s.  Puffed sleeves, lots of lace and crazy headpieces?  You were a rockin’ bride.

I remember Second Noah!!! I still have several episodes recorded on VHS tapes that I occasionally watch.

And who in the world decides to get married five days before Christmas? That’s one crazy friend!

I LOVED Second Noah! And that was when I fell in love with James Marsden. OK, weird question, do you remember the name of the character or actress who played his love interest? I cannot find her – I think she had a child on the show.

Hmm, this makes me like you even more!

My college roomate got married 3 days after Christmas – the blizzard the day after Christmas made it so fun to get there! Our dresses were gold – we all looked like Christmas balls. I’ve worn gold, cranberry, purple with black lase, and a midnight blue (my favorite).

just FYI…james marsden’s father is (/was?) a professor at k-state. which i know makes you like it deep down just a teensy bit more. =)

  4. I was a bridesmaid three times. The first wedding was in the early 90s. I had to wear a white velvet jacket with a peplum and a big gold lame’ rose. The skirt was gold lame’. We wore gold heels and a wreath of roses and sprigs of pine tree in our hair. Christmas wedding.

Second wedding was also in the early 90s. My dress was a burgundy satin ball gown with the full skirt and off-the shoulders bodice.

Third was 2001. I was HUGELY pregnant with Tommy and had to wear yet another burgundy satin dress, but the styling was more reasonable. Still, I looked utterly ridiculous.

I share these here, with you, because the brides read my blog and I don’t want them to know how horrendous the first two dresses were, especially.

Of course, I feel the dark cobalt blue georgette dresses I had my bridesmaids wear were perfect, reasonable, and stylish enough to wear again and again and again. If they ever needed to be a blueberry in a play, they had something to wear.

I have never been a bridesmaid. Probably some day, but you never know. My bridesmaid’s wore red (apple, actually, I think) and a skirt/top combination that should have been somewhat reusable. But who knows. Also, I bought the dresses, so they can’t complain.

I was just thinking about Second Noah this morning. I kid you not.

Also, my first time as a bridesmaid is next weekend. The dress is beautiful and absolutely something I can wear again. Given the amount of weddings I have coming up over the next year or so, I’d say that’s a good thing. Plus, I totally have the approval of the woman who did my alterations. She said she’s seen plenty of ugly dresses but likes the one my friend chose — “even though it’s hot pink,” she added.

I picked very simple navy dresses for my wedding, but both of the girls (my sister and my bf) that stood up for me were 6 months pregnant (due 4 days apart), by the time our wedding rolled around. Neither one of them will ever be able to wear those dresses again. Ever try to find maternity bridesmaid dresses? It’s pretty interesting.
